Turn your swatch measurements into stitches and rows per inch or centimetre, and work out how many stitches and rows you need for a target size.
Enter your swatch
Measure a flat, relaxed swatch, ideally at least 4 in (10 cm) square, and count the stitches and rows across it.
Optional: how big should the finished piece be?
How it works
Three steps, a few seconds.
Measure your swatch
Count stitches and rows, and measure the width and height.
Press Calculate
The calculator works out stitches and rows per unit, and per 4 in or 10 cm.
Plan your project
Add a target size to see how many stitches and rows to make.
What is crochet gauge?
Gauge is how many stitches and rows fit into a set measurement, usually 4 inches or 10 centimetres. Two people using the same yarn and hook can get different gauges, because everyone crochets with a slightly different tension. Matching the pattern’s gauge is what makes a garment fit the way the designer intended.
How to measure a swatch
Crochet a swatch a little larger than 4 in (10 cm) in the stitch pattern from your project. Let it rest flat without stretching it, then count the stitches across and the rows up, and measure the width and height. Enter those numbers above. If your gauge is different from the pattern’s, try a smaller hook for a tighter gauge, or a larger one for a looser gauge, and measure again.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wash my swatch first?
If the finished piece will be washed, wash and dry the swatch the same way before measuring, because some yarns grow or shrink.
How many stitches should I count?
Count as many as you can across a swatch of at least 4 in (10 cm). A larger swatch gives a more accurate result.
Why are my rows and stitches different per inch?
Crochet stitches are usually not square, so rows per inch and stitches per inch are normally different numbers.
