Frequently asked questions

What does the asterisk (*) mean in a crochet pattern?

An asterisk marks the start of a section you repeat. In *7 sc, inc* repeat around, you work 7 single crochet then an increase over and over until the round is complete.

How do I know if my crochet pattern is US or UK?

If the pattern uses “single crochet” it is almost certainly US, because UK terms have no single crochet. UK patterns also say “tension” instead of “gauge” and “miss” instead of “skip”.

How much yarn do I need for a crochet project?

Crochet a swatch, note how many yards it used, then scale up by area. The Yarn Estimator above does this and adds a safety buffer.

What is crochet gauge and why does it matter?

Gauge is how many stitches and rows fit in a set measurement, usually a 4-inch (10 cm) square. Matching gauge makes a garment or hat come out the right size.

What size crochet hook do I need?

Your yarn label suggests a hook size and the pattern will specify one. The printed mm size on the hook is the most reliable measure across brands.
